The
Mid-Atlantic coast, with trade and commerce in the area going back to colonial
times, has many, many interesting shipwrecks. This fascinating chart shows over
500 shipwrecks, including ocean liners, submarines, freighters, and sailing
ships. Also included is information about "the Mooncussers", Collisions at sea,
The Lighthouses, The Life-Saving Service, Delaware Bay, and the U-boats.
Accounts of over 30 of the most interesting shipwrecks are presented.
Discover the story of the Faithful Steward, a British ship carrying
259 people and 400 barrels of copper coins from Ireland to Philadelphia. When
she went down only 68 passengers survived. Ever since, coins have washed ashore
in an area known as "Coin Beach" which is just north of Indian River Inlet.
